The brief article below on the left in
The Evening Record November 17, 1917,
tells of J. Emery Dederick getting a promotion to Second Lieutenant and drilling with the Field Artillery battery in Englewood.

The brief article below on the right in
The Evening Record September 9, 1918,
tells of J. Emory Dederick returning to Fort Story in Virginia after a five-day furlough.

Note the first article spells his name “Emery” and the second “Emory.” It is a newspaper doing what it does: best delivering the news quickly without the ability to pay too much attention to detail. Either way, it is the same guy from the same address in the same battery.
